Multiplication

This week we have really focused on multiplication.

Children should already be able to count in 2s, 5s and 10s
0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10....
0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25....
0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60...

We started by looking at multiplication as repeated addition (this means turning a times sum into an add sum so that it's easier to understand) For example:

5 x 5 =
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25

Once children understand that multiplication means how many groups there are of a number...

4 x 5 =

Group 1                         Group 2                          Group 3                        Group 4

*****                              *****                            *****                            *****

There are 4 groups and 5 stars in each group. You could count them altogether but it's much easier to learn how to count in 5s and know that 4 x 5 = 20

CHALLENGE: Children who are confident with a range of different multiplication sums and know the timetables off by heart and now looking into the relationship between  ÷ and x

WELL DONE everyone, you had a fantastic lesson learning about multiplication today. Please come back on Sunday and tell me what you've practised or learnt over the weekend...

Camera angles and shots

We have started to think about camera angles and shots. We used imovie to create fun, short clips. Can you spot a close-up?

Which product will you buy?

Today we designed a new age mobile phone.
We thought of company names and designed a logo.
We then took the design to the manufacturer.
Tomorrow we will start to design print and digital adverts.
Which will then go to the printers and recording studio.

Each company will have to pay 250,000 pounds for a 30 second slot in the middle of XFactor!

Then it's a matter of which product will fly off the shelves fastest?!

Alexander Graham Bell

Today we learnt about Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, read more about him by clicking here

We looked at phones from 1876 to modern day and wow they have changed! So, this week were going to turn into inventors and design a phone of the future. Once we have designed and created our product we will be making adverts to try and sell them. Don't forget we have an awards ceremony at the end of our Media Magic topic!

Homework TONIGHT: Think of a name for your phone business!

HEADLINE

The world's fastest rocket has crashed into the Burj Khalifa. Journalists are on their way to interview the pilot as we speak! Check back later for more information.

Which questions are good questions and why?

Move over David Attenborough!

We are currently writing, filming and editing our own wildlife documentaries. Watch this space...

Here you have it...

2B researched a creature of their choice, wrote facts, chose who would act, narrate and film and produced these wonderful, funny clips!

Homework wc 13th January

Literacy Homework

Task: For Literacy homework this week, we’d like you to build on the excellent work you completed at home last week. You should already have a list of interesting facts that you wrote about an animal of your choice. We’d now like you to organise your facts carefully.

Firstly, read your facts again and think about headings that would fit well, for example, if you wrote fact that lions eat other animals you might choose the heading ‘Food’ or if you wrote a fact that elephants have rough, grey skin you might choose the heading ‘skin.’ Then write a paragraph of information under each heading, try to develop your ideas. Lastly, next to each paragraph, draw a picture or diagram to fit with your writing.

There are templates available to help you organise your report or if you feel confident you can write your report straight into your homework book using headings and pictures.

Challenge: If you feel confident completing the homework task above then include an introduction and summary to your report.
Some useful websites to help you with this activity are:

Numeracy Homework

Numeracy homework is about finding the difference between two numbers, for example, the difference between 10 and 12 is 2. There are worksheets that can be printed off the GLG about finding the difference or feel free to write your own questions and answers in your homework book.

The difference between 18 and 24 is 6.

Introduction

Today 2B have been learning how to write an introduction to a non-chronological report. Here's an example of what was written to introduce a report about snakes...

This report is about snakes. Snakes are long, thin reptiles. This report is for people who want to learn more about snakes or who are visiting a place that has snakes. In this report you will find information about skin, prey, different types of snakes, deadly snakes and teeth.

We talked about how to write an introduction and decided it should include: what the report is about, who the report would be useful for, a short definition and a short description about what can be found in the main part of the report.

Here's some more information about non-chronological reports:

Text Type and Purpose

To provide information about the way things are; can include natural, social and cultural phenomena.

Structural Features

Introduction opens with the definition of the subject. This is followed by a series of paragraphs containing information about aspects of the subject. It finishes with a summary statement.

Language Features

  • Present or past tense
  • Technical or precise language
  • 3rd person
  • Logical connectives link information
  • General or specific participants

Where are non-chronological reports found?

Encyclopedias, reference books, guide books, text books.

Numeracy Homework – 8.1.13

This week in numeracy we have been learning to read and write 3 digit numbers and how to partition these numbers into hundreds, tens and units. For homework this week please play some of the following games:

if you would like to you could take pictures of your favourite game or write down some of your mathematical working in your homework book.

Literacy homework – 8.1.13

This week we have started learning about non-chronological reports. The first stage of writing a report is to research what you would like to write about.

Which animal interests you but you don’t know much about? Perhaps it’ll be a ferocious polar bear, the giant blue whale or the slow sloth.

Choose one animal and research interesting facts about that animal. Then, in your homework book write a list of facts (remembering the difference between fact and opinion!). Think about the layout of your work and use numbers OR bullet points to organise your list.

Media Magic!

To start our topic on Media Magic, we thought about what communication means. How many different ways of communication can you think of?

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year...it's 2013 and it's going to be a good one!

This week we're starting by learning about place value and adding/subtracting/multiplying multiples of 10 in Numeracy.

This week we're learning how to write non-chronological reports in Literacy. This topic will include: writing in the third person, writing introductions and conclusions, organising writing into paragraphs, note-taking, varying openers, presentation and research skills.

We will have an exciting start to our new topic tomorrow, watch this space...

If you'd like any help or a chat about our new topics, please see me
